Cutting Board Care
A handmade hardwood cutting board can last years with the right care. Unlike plastic or bamboo boards though, real wood needs a bit of attention to maintain its beauty and cleanliness.
Clean Gently (No Dishwasher!)
After each use, wipe your board with warm water and mild dish soap. Rinse, then dry immediately with a towel and place the board on its edge. Avoid soaking and never put it in the dishwasher, the excess heat and moisture is almost guaranteed to cause warping or cracking.
Disinfect Gently
If needed, sprinkle coarse salt or baking soda on the surface, then rub with half a lemon. This neutralizes odors and keeps your board fresh without harsh chemicals.
Oil Regularly
Once every few weeks, or when the wood looks dry, apply a coat of food-grade mineral oil or cutting board conditioner. Spread the oil/conditioner evenly on all sides of the board and let it sit for an hour or more if possible, then wipe away the excess. Oiling and conditioning regularly helps seal and prevent the wood from drying, cracking, or absorbing unwanted odors.
Store Properly
Keep your board in a dry place, standing upright on one edge if possible, to allow airflow around it. Storing boards flat on their face may cause them to cup over time, especially if moisture is present. Avoid storing near direct sunlight or heat sources.
Refresh Over Time
Don't be afraid to use your boards, they are meant to be cut on after all. If your board starts to look and feel a little rough, you can lightly sand it with fine-grit sandpaper (180 grit sandpaper along the grain works well) and reapply mineral oil and board conditioner.
